Some people don't get it.

Scanning my Google Reader today, I found this post from Ryan Alexander (a Bayh staffer)'s blog.

The basic concept: Send us your complaints about high gas prices and win tickets to an Indy Car race.

Nevermind the fact that the race is in Kentucky and only five days away, this is a bad idea on another level. This is like holding a "Tell me why you're a vegetarian" contest and giving the winner a side of beef.

The logic behind it is even better:

The IndyCar Series couldn’t be better inspiration for taking action to reduce America’s oil consumption. Unlike an IndyCar, Congress doesn’t move at 220 miles an hour, but we owe it to the American people to pick up the pace before it is too late. IndyCars currently run on a blended fuel using 10 percent ethanol, a fuel usually made from corn. Next year every car in the series will use 100 percent ethanol fuel.

So let's get this straight: At a time when ethanol prices are skyrocketing, i'm supposed to praise Indy Car racing for switching to 100% ethanol and raising demand so they can use it to drive in circles?

I'll pass.

While misguided, I think there is some worthiness in their efforts to appeal to voters who are fans of autoracing. There's a lot more to appealing than just offering tickets but they've got the right starting place to work.

Isn't that just pandering?

Or reaching out to an audience that won't come to them. I suppose the two terms or ideas are somewhat interchangeable.
